Read Thai in a Weekend Workshop

"Gary, what a great day. Thank you so much. I was on the way home on the BTS reading the signs everywhere... What an experience...  Your course is fantastic!" Stephen Reynolds (stephenseminar.com). Read what others have said (the good and the bad)...

c-aah-w

Carrying a Cactus – Aaaah what a relief! – Wiggly legs

คาว c-aah-w (no tone) – stench, smelly/fishy

IMAGINE a cow walking along a long flat beach,
leaving a trail of foul fish-smelling manure behind her!

There are many meanings for "cow", depending on how you say it. Without any tone, it's stench, but it can also mean rice, white, mountain, enter, knee, news or she/he. Come and learn how to recognize them all and say it right!

1. The first half-day session will be a review of the basic material, explanation of how to pronounce Thai correctly and how to say the tones naturally.

2. The second session will cover all but the more obscure letters, and we will introduce the concept of reading and saying the tones in Thai.

3. The third session will be reading practice: signs, a short story, consolidation of the tones and completing the rest of the letters and tones. You will also learn to recognize the stylish modern fonts used commonly in advertising and magazines, and also in handwriting.

4. The fourth and last session (Sunday afternoon) will be lots of guided reading practice.

In the workshop, you will read and understand it on the morning of the second day! It's that fast! We spend the rest of the day practicing your newfound reading skills, reading progressively more complex material (see end of page). It only takes a day to learn, but you simply need to read for it to consolidate in your mind so that you gain fluency and understanding in Thai.

Using an approach based on quirky visual associations and bizarre (and obscene!), shocking stories, and dispensing with political & linguistic correctness, you will learn to read Thai accurately (but without necessarily understanding at this stage). Nevertheless, by reviewing the self-study e-book and practicing to read signs and notices around you after the course, you will gain a vocabulary of around 500 key words (half of which are derived from English) as a side effect - without having to actively memorize them.

It sounds incredible, but it works. And it's guaranteed.

surfing tonetone-surfing

The "surfing" tone marker
Boys
and girls are sporty and so can surf down the wave with ease - yeah! This is the exciting (falling) tone.
Ladyboys are clumsy and sickly, so they get thrown up in the air by the wave - oops! The uncertain (high-rising) tone.

Most people give up on Thai because it seems so difficult. Not so! Thai is relatively easy to learn (much fewer words than other major languages, a very simple grammar, fairly consistent, etc.). And even the tones are not as alien as you would expect. English uses the same tones as Thai, just for different purposes (e.g., the rising tone is the same as when we ask a question: "is it mine?", "is it sohng?").

If you have lived (or intend to live) in Thailand for more than a year then you should learn some Thai. This is the fastest and easiest way to get started. I only give this workshop a few times a year. It is a rare opportunity for you to jump-start your ability to learn Thai, which you will be able to do by absorbing (real) Thai very quickly from your surroundings, and without having to make a conscious effort to do so!

Signs like these will be a doddle! (hover over pictures for translation)

No more excuses! It isn't difficult and doesn't take long. Come along and get it out of the way once and for all... The traditional approach to learning Thai is time-consuming, arduous and expensive. This intensive workshop will free you from being an illiterate, uneducated migrant, stuck in an 'expat' bubble and limited to communicating in a curious 'farang' dialect known as 'Taxi Thai'. It's like having a veil lifted and suddenly being able to see and enjoy your surroundings for real.

Research has shown that the more you read, the more you can hear and understand what people are saying. And then the ability to speak comes naturally. You only have to overcome your shyness in expressing yourself in a theatrical and singsong manner. Mental strategies to achieve this will be discussed in the workshop.

(Speaking does also involve muscle training, of your mouth and tongue. So a good idea is to read aloud in an exaggerated manner. You'll find yourself communicating comfortably in no time!)

Participants will receive the Read Thai in a Day self study e-course included in the workshop fee. Indeed, to derive maximum benefit from the workshop, it is a prerequisite that you work through the e-course briefly beforehand. It will allow us to immediately address the subtleties and typical questions of understanding and communicating in Thai. Please download the demo from www.learnthaionline.com.

You may also choose to save money and go it alone by purchasing an access code directly. The e-course is backed by a no-quibbles 30-day money-back guarantee. Some people prefer the social aspects of learning in a fun, interactive way and being made to work through the exercises. You can always decide to come to the workshop later, in which case you'll get the cost of the e-course deducted from the workshop fee.

If you wish to attend then please contact me and I will send you the booking and payment details.

Looking forward to seeing you at the workshop.
